Yorkshire Day

Happy Yorkshire Day!

The celebration of Yorkshire Day was begun in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society as a protest against the 1974 Local Government re-organisation.. the Light Infantry previously known as the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry already celebrated the day as Minden Day (The Battle of Minden was fought on August 1, 1759 during the Seven Years' War) by the wearing of a white rose in the headdress; the soldiers picked wild roses to wear in their caps as they advanced. It is also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834 campaigned for by the Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce.
